Announcement Date 2-24-2022
Effective Wednesday, March 2, Monongalia County Schools will no longer require masks to be worn inside MCS’ buildings or transportation vehicles, including buses. Masks will be optional for everyone.
Based on the decrease in positive case numbers and guidance by our state and local health officials, indoor masking is no longer considered a necessary protocol to manage the spread of COVID-19 variants for the foreseeable future. However, disposable masks will remain available for students and staff who prefer to wear one for health reasons.
The use of masks in public is now common and, for some, the benefits of wearing a mask continue to outweigh health risks. Families are encouraged to have conversations about respecting, accepting and validating the viewpoints of staff and students who choose to continue masking. Visit Tips for talking to your child about optional masks to start the conversation.
Monongalia County Schools will continue to report positive COVID-19 cases to the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources on a weekly basis. The updates are posted publicly on Fridays via the Department of Education’s School Case Dashboard at https://wvde.us/covid19/school-covid-dashboard/ .
It is expected that students and staff will remain diligent in monitoring for symptoms of COVID-19 and if experiencing signs of illness, should stay home and be tested.
If testing positive, regardless of masking or vaccination status, students and staff are required to isolate for at least five days and follow the protocols per the Updated School Guidance. It is recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that everyone ages 5 years and older become fully vaccinated to protect against the COVID-19 virus and related variants.
Monongalia County Schools anticipated lifting the mask requirement when lower case numbers were reported and across-the-board indicators deemed it is safe to do so. As such, requirements are subject to change as we continue to monitor case activity and health guidance through the remainder of the school year.
